A question I’m often asked is ‘Where can I take business clients for lunch?’ and this being a business publication, it’s a very relevant question. Here are my top picks.

  1. The Gingerman
The first and original of the local Ginger empire which includes the Ginger Fox, Dog and Pig. In my opinion this is the jewel in the crown. Slightly out the way from the centre of Brighton, this is worth the short trip. Arguably the fi nest food and service in Brighton (read a full review on page 66), this is the ideal place to impress a client. Whilst this is unquestionably fine dining cuisine, the dining room is relaxed, informal with a bistro feel. The absence of loud music but with a pleasant hum of busy tables nearby, mean that business conversation is easy without the fear of being overheard.
  1. The Restaurant At Drakes
Another stalwart of the local fine dining scene Drakes provides consistently good cuisine and service with attention to detail and an air of luxury. The room is in the basement of the Drakes hotel on the seafront and has a more intimate feel. While not as informal a feel as the Gingerman, this is a place to come if you want a more serious environment (although frankly this is all relative as nowhere in Brighton is ever as formal as the hushed environs of some high end London establishments).
  1. The Salt Room
Arguably one of the most stunning dining rooms in Brighton. Funky, modern, airy, chic. The scale and design would not look out of place in New York or Chicago. A great seafront location will impress out of towners. Food is imaginative, high end but with good bistro classics such as burgers, steaks and the unmissable Josper grilled fi sh of the day. Service can be inconsistent but you should be fine at lunchtime.
  1. The Curlew At Bodiam, East Sussex
Fine dining in an elegant pub restaurant set within beautiful countryside. The Curlew, serving modern British cuisine, has maintained its reputation for fine dining for over a decade. Having won numerous accolades over the years, most recently as finalists for the best dining experience in the Sussex food awards.
